EKSU Convocation 2026: Full Speech by Chancellor Dr. Tunji Olowolafe
Ado-Ekiti, Nigeria – April 2026
The Chancellor of Ekiti State University (EKSU), Dr. Tunji Olowolafe, delivered an inspiring address during the institution’s 30th Convocation Ceremony, urging graduating students to embrace the principles of hard work, humility, and honesty.
Speaking before dignitaries, faculty members, parents and graduates, the Chancellor congratulated the Class of 2026 and emphasized that a university certificate is only the beginning of life’s journey.
Opening Address to Dignitaries and Graduates
Dr. Olowolafe acknowledged the presence of the Governor of Ekiti State and Visitor to the University, Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, members of the university governing council, diplomatic representatives, traditional rulers, faculty members, and proud families.
According to him, Ekiti State University has spent more than four decades producing graduates who contribute significantly to Nigeria, Africa, and the global community.
“That legacy alone should give everyone in this hall reason to pause and feel proud,” he said.
The 3Hs: Hard Work, Humility and Honesty
The Chancellor shared a personal story about being raised by his grandmother who, despite being unable to read or write English, taught him three guiding principles:
- Hard work
- Humility
- Honesty
He described these values as the “3Hs” that have guided every major decision in his life and career.
“Your certificate will open doors, but your values will determine what you do once you are inside the room,” he told the graduates.
From Medicine to National Infrastructure
Dr. Olowolafe revealed that he trained as a medical doctor at the University of Ilorin but later left active medical practice in 1988 after identifying broader challenges in society.
His career shift eventually led to:
- The establishment of Deux Project Limited
- Leadership roles in major infrastructure development
- Chairmanship of the Lekki Concession Company
- Participation in the acquisition of Nigeria’s first aluminium can manufacturing company
He noted that the same values of the 3Hs guided those decisions.
Investing in EKSU Lecturers
The Chancellor stressed the importance of continuous development for academic staff, noting that the strength of any great university lies in its faculty.
Through the Tunji Olowolafe Foundation, an endowment has been created to sponsor EKSU lecturers to attend international academic conferences in Europe and North America.
Since 2024, the foundation has sponsored 37 lecturers to present research and build global academic networks.
Project Digi-Teach EKSU
Dr. Olowolafe also announced a major initiative called Project Digi-Teach EKSU.
The programme aims to achieve 100% digital proficiency among all 650 lecturers and faculty members in the university.
The initiative includes:
- Digital training for all academic staff
- Expansion of campus-wide Wi-Fi connectivity
- Technology integration in teaching and learning
“A university that prepares students for the digital economy must itself be fluent in the digital world,” he stated.
Empowering EKSU Students for the Future
The Chancellor explained that modern education must go beyond theoretical learning.
EKSU plans to adopt practical, industry-driven learning approaches including:
- Real-world problem solving
- Partnerships with fintech, agritech, and energy companies
- Integration of digital literacy and communication skills
- Dual-path certification for career readiness or entrepreneurship
EKSU Trading Room Initiative
One of the university’s flagship student development projects is the EKSU Trading Room, established in 2025.
The facility allows students to learn financial market trading using professional tools and platforms in partnership with the CFA Institute Nigeria.
The initiative has now evolved into the EKSU Financial Market Trading Programme, a diploma course approved by the university senate.
Geoscience Earth Laboratory
To strengthen practical learning, a fully equipped Geoscience Earth Laboratory was also established for the Department of Geology.
The lab provides modern computer systems and field equipment for geological research and student fieldwork.
Student Internship Opportunities
Civil Engineering students from EKSU were recently placed on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway Project for a six-month internship with HiTech Construction Company.
The internship provided students with hands-on experience on one of Nigeria’s largest infrastructure projects.
Rewarding Academic Excellence
The Tunji Olowolafe Foundation also rewards academic excellence through the First-Class Seed Fund.
Each graduate who earns a First Class degree receives a ₦500,000 cash award to support their career or entrepreneurial journey.
These graduates are also inducted into the TOF First Class Graduate Club for ongoing mentorship and professional development.
Global Opportunities for EKSU Students
EKSU recently partnered with Springpod, a London-based career platform that connects students with global professional opportunities.
Through this partnership, EKSU became the first African university accredited on the platform.
This gives students access to virtual work experiences with global companies including:
- Amazon
- Barclays
- Deloitte
- Rolls-Royce
Final Message to the Class of 2026
In his closing remarks, the Chancellor encouraged graduates to carry the 3Hs throughout their lives.
“Carry hard work because nothing worthwhile is built without it. Carry humility so you never stop learning. And carry honesty because integrity is something no one can take from you,” he said.
He congratulated the graduating class and wished them success as they embark on the next chapter of their lives.
“Congratulations Class of 2026. May God bless you, your families, and our nation.”
