EKSU Becomes First State University to Implement New ASUU Salary Structure

Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ado-Ekiti, has emerged as the first state university in Nigeria to implement the newly approved salary structure for members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Babatola Ayodele, disclosed this while addressing journalists ahead of the institution’s 30th Convocation Ceremony.
According to him, the implementation followed the new agreement reached between the Federal Government and ASUU in January 2026, which introduced a 40 percent salary increase for lecturers.
The agreement, which took effect from January 1, 2026, brought an end to the long-standing dispute surrounding the 2009 agreement between the Federal Government and ASUU.
Professor Ayodele explained that EKSU implemented the new salary structure in the March 2026 salary payment, making the institution the first state university in the country to do so.
He commended the leadership of the ASUU chapter in the university for their support and cooperation since his appointment as Vice-Chancellor.
“With the support of our Visitor to the University and Governor of Ekiti State, His Excellency Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, as well as the Governing Council led by Professor Akin Oyebode, EKSU has become the first state university in Nigeria to implement the newly approved salary structure for ASUU. All members of the EKSU chapter received the new salaries beginning from March 2026.”
The Vice-Chancellor added that the university would also be ready to implement similar salary adjustments for non-teaching staff once agreements are finalized by the Federal Government and relevant unions.
10,959 Students Graduate, 82 Earn First Class
Speaking on the forthcoming convocation ceremony, Professor Ayodele revealed that a total of 10,959 students would be graduating from the university.
Out of this number, 82 students will graduate with First Class honours across undergraduate, postgraduate and diploma programmes.
Convocation Lecture and Honorary Degrees
The convocation lecture will be delivered by Professor Ayodeji Omole, Chairman of the Governing Council of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso.
The lecture titled “Power, Responsibility and Stewardship: Balancing the Barricade with Governance” will take place on April 8, 2026.
Professor Ayodele also revealed that two distinguished alumni of the university, Abayomi Adeyeri and Akinsanmi Falaki, will be conferred with Honorary Doctor of Finance degrees during the convocation ceremony.
The honorary awards will be presented during the main convocation ceremony scheduled for Saturday, April 11, 2026.
Major Achievements Recorded Under Current Administration
Professor Ayodele, who assumed office as Vice-Chancellor in August 2024, highlighted several achievements recorded under his leadership.
He noted that the university has maintained a stable academic calendar and expanded its academic programmes and faculties.
According to him, the number of faculties in the university has increased from 12 to 14, while more globally recognized academic programmes are being introduced.
He also commended the Governor of Ekiti State, Biodun Oyebanji, for providing an enabling environment that has ensured stability in the academic calendar.
“EKSU will continue to remain a shining light among universities in the South-West and across Nigeria.”
₦109 Million Research Grant and Student Innovation Award
The Vice-Chancellor further disclosed that the university recently attracted research grants worth ₦109 million from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).
He also revealed that a student of the College of Medicine, Oladipo Daniel, won a Federal Government innovation grant of ₦50,000 for a student-led venture initiative.
Call for Support to Improve Infrastructure
Professor Ayodele appealed to individuals, alumni and organizations to support the university in providing critical infrastructure, particularly laboratories and lecture theatres.
He also appealed to the Ekiti State Government to consider granting the College of Medicine autonomous funding status to help the university effectively manage the capital-intensive medical training programmes.
According to him, such support will enable the institution to continue producing competent and globally competitive medical professionals.
