EKSU Clarifies Alleged Gunmen Attack on Students, Says Incident Was Burglary

Ado-Ekiti, Nigeria — March 31, 2026

The management of Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ado-Ekiti, has issued an official clarification regarding viral online reports claiming that gunmen attacked students in off-campus hostels around the university community.

In a statement released on Monday, the institution described the reports as misleading, explaining that the actual incident involved burglary and the forceful theft of students’ mobile phones by suspected miscreants, not an armed gunmen attack as widely circulated online.

What Really Happened

According to the university’s management, the incident occurred in some off-campus hostels located within the university environment.

The situation involved individuals suspected to be criminals who allegedly broke into hostels and dispossessed students of their phones and other valuables.

The institution emphasized that the case is currently under investigation by the police.

Police Arrest Suspect

Security agencies quickly responded after the incident was reported.

The Iworoko Divisional Police Headquarters alongside EKSU security personnel launched an immediate operation.

Authorities confirmed that one suspect was arrested on Monday, March 30, 2026 around 2:30 a.m.

Items recovered from the suspect include:

  • A face mask
  • A motorcycle suspected to have been used in the operation

The suspect has been transferred to the state police headquarters for further investigation and possible arrest of other fleeing suspects.

Security Reinforced Around EKSU

Following the incident, EKSU management announced that additional security measures have been deployed in the affected areas.

Security operations now involve collaboration between:

  • EKSU security personnel
  • Rapid Response Squad (RRS)
  • Patrol and Guard units
  • Iworoko Divisional Police officers

The university stated that day and night patrols and surveillance operations have been intensified to ensure the safety of students and residents in the university community.

Ekiti Government Reacts

The university also acknowledged the support of the Ekiti State Government under the leadership of Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji.

According to the management, the government has taken immediate steps to strengthen security around the campus and prevent future occurrences.

Normalcy Restored

EKSU reassured students and the public that the situation has been fully brought under control and normal activities have resumed within the affected areas.

The university reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property within the institution and urged students to remain calm and continue their daily activities without fear.

The official statement was signed by Mr Babatope Ogunleye on behalf of the Directorate of Information and Corporate Affairs.
