EKSU Denies Withholding NELFUND Tuition Refunds, Says Payments Are Ongoing in Batches
Published: July 9, 2026
If you are an Ekiti State University (EKSU) student wondering whether the university has stopped refunding NELFUND tuition payments, the management says the answer is No.
EKSU has denied allegations that it is withholding tuition fee refunds from students who benefited from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), clarifying that refunds are currently being processed in batches.
The clarification was contained in a statement issued on Thursday by the university's Directorate of Information and Corporate Affairs.
EKSU Says NELFUND Refunds Are Ongoing
According to the statement signed by Gbenga Oluwajana on behalf of the Deputy Registrar and Head of the Directorate, students whose tuition fees were later paid through NELFUND after they had initially paid personally are already receiving refunds.
The university described claims that it had refused to refund affected students as false, stressing that the refund exercise is ongoing.
EKSU also reiterated its commitment to supporting the successful implementation of the Federal Government's student loan programme.
"The University has been refunding qualified students and remains committed to ensuring that all eligible beneficiaries receive their refunds in accordance with due process."
Why Some Students Have Not Received Their Refunds
According to the university, the remaining unresolved cases are mainly due to verification issues, including:
- Discrepancies on students' NELFUND dashboards.
- Payment record inconsistencies.
- Incorrect or incomplete bank account details.
EKSU explained that the refund exercise is being carried out in phases to ensure proper verification before payments are made.
Students Asked to Visit NELFUND Desk Office
Students whose refunds are still pending have been advised to visit the NELFUND Desk Office or the University Bursary Department for verification.
Affected students should ensure that their banking information is accurate and update any incorrect details to enable the processing of their refunds.
Allegation by NANS
The clarification followed an earlier statement by the President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Babatunde Akinteye, who listed EKSU among institutions allegedly yet to refund students despite receiving NELFUND tuition payments on their behalf.
However, EKSU maintained that the allegation does not reflect the current situation, insisting that qualified students have already been refunded while others are being processed.
EKSU Reaffirms Commitment to Transparency
The university reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability and due process in administering the NELFUND scheme.
It also commended the Federal Government for introducing the student loan initiative, describing it as a major intervention aimed at improving access to higher education through financial support.
